Genealogy Room

The John H. Wootters Crockett Public Library provides a well-equipped genealogy area. We have a vast collection of books and other records for Houston County including vertical file boxes on many families who have donated their own research materials.

Although we specialize in Houston County research, we also have many volumes about Texas with sections devoted to information about many counties in the state.

In addition, the genealogy room contains many helpful books about getting started in research and about knowing where to search for information. Other sections include genealogical information about many states,
especially those whose citizens migrated to Texas. Records of emigrants, family names, and major wars are also available.

The second room in the genealogy area houses a computer with microfilm records scanned to the hard drive with past issues of The Grapeland Messenger and The Houston County Courier. Patrons can also use this computer for online research.

A reader that magnifies small print can be used by researchers to read books and documents from our collection or documents patrons bring from home. This machine is especially helpful for the visually impaired.

Out of area genealogy questions

The Crockett Library genealogy room is managed by volunteers and can perform limited genealogical research.

The fee for genealogical research is $10.00 per specific question and $5.00 for the next two questions with a maximum of three questions.

Submit your question by mail and include a stamped (.76 cent) self-addressed envelope as well as the required fee per question.

After we receive your written request and fees, we will research your question(s)as time allows, hopefully within six weeks.
